Nadra, wrapped up in her blanket, sat between Connor and me in his car. He really needed to get a better ride than this dinky sedan. I glanced over at my truck and sighed. That was a more fitting vehicle for a powerful wolf. But how could I tell him that? I would hate to offend him. Males could be so prickly, especially concerning their masculinity.

I put my arm around Nadra as Connor started up the car. She gave me a shy smile. “I never realized you were a werewolf,” she whispered. “I just thought you were, um...”

“The girl that doesn't get math?” I laughed.

Nadra nodded.

“Why does X always change what it means?”

“Because it's a variable,” Nadra giggled. “That's pretty basic.”

“I don't know why I even went to college.” I sighed. “I'm just going to get a job in the forestry service like the rest of my...” I wasn't a part of the pack any longer. I was part of Connor's pack. And it consisted of the three of us and Annabeth. My face fell as my heart ached. I hadn't realized what I had lost this morning.

“Are you okay?” Nadra asked, leaning her head on my shoulder.

“Yeah. I was just thinking about how my life changed today.”

“Yes, it did,” Connor grinned.

Rain began misting the windshield and his wipers squeaked. I hated that sound. “What's it like living without a pack, Connor?”

“Huh?”

“I grew up with this tightly-knit pack of werewolves. And now I just have you, Nadra, and Annabeth.” I swallowed. “It's...” What was it? I couldn't quite find the words.

“I don't really know,” Connor answered. “I mean, I was raised by my adopted parents and I have an older, adopted sister. They were...like a family. We loved each other and lived together. Sometimes we fought and sometimes we had a great time together. But most importantly, we were there for each other.”

I smiled at that. “A family sounds a lot like a pack. How about you, Nadra?”

“Oh, well, my parents were poor, but they did love me.” She swallowed. “But...um...” Tears beaded in her eyes.

“Oh, I'm sorry.” I squeezed her shoulders. “I didn't mean to pry.”

“It's okay,” she smiled. “You didn't know.” She took a deep breath. “So what about Annabeth? I've never seen her at school.”

“She's a new janitor. I trained her over the weekend and, well, the moment I saw her I knew she would be mine.”

I shifted. There was something off about the girl. “So you don't know much about her?”

“Nope.”

“She knows how to fight. And, well...you saw how she fought.”

“Yep.” Connor grinned. “She pulled a knife on me when I took her the first time. Put it right against my throat.”

“Damn,” I muttered. I shifted. “So, you've never met her parents.”

Connor shook his head.

“And she's definitely not local.” I was really afraid she was a Hunter. That would be bad. There had been a few hikers killed by wild animals. What if there were Hunters in Buckley. Connor and I didn't have a pack to try and protect us.
